Canada's Black Watch: Legacies of Gallantry and Service

Canada's Black Watch, 1862-2012
Legacies of Gallantry and Service
Earl John Chapman

Paperback edition ISBN 978-0-9782507-3-7

The Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment) of Canada, founded in Montreal in 1862, is Canada's senior Highland Regiment. Throughout its history - now 150 years and counting - the Canadian "Watch" created a magnificent national legacy. Within the memory of this famous regiment is much of the history of Canada itself, with names like Paardeberg, Ypres, the Somme, Vimy, and Passchendaele echoing in the hearts of all Canadians. And even away from the sound of the guns, in peacetime and in the Cold War, the great armoury on Bleury Street has stood mute witness to the growth of a city, the love of her citizens, a quiet pride in a very particular tradition that is the very spine of the Canadian experience.

In this volume, author Earl John Chapman unfolds this saga for the reader by featuring forty-six legacy items carefully selected from the many hundreds of items in the Regiment's collection, as well as a few items held in other collections. In word and picture, the story of Canada's Black Watch is brought to life. It is a tale of dedication, of gains and losses, of devotion and sacrifice. More than anything, this volume is a tribute to all those men and women, and their families, who made such an important contribution to the Regiment and to Canada.
